Pioneer: 400Gb disc, BD recorders on the way

Company announces new hardware and
media products by the end of this year.

New 16 layer discs will hold 400Gb of data

JAPAN’S PIONEER CORP. has developed an optical disc capable of holding 400 Gigabytes, around sixteen times the capacity of current Blu-ray discs.

Pioneer users a disc structure that can reduce crosstalk from adjacent layers, resulting in a 16-layer, with 25GB per layer, optical read-only disc that can play back high-quality signals from every layer.

Pioneer says the technology is backwards-compatible with the Blu-ray technology, as the objective lens optical specifications are the same as used by the lenses in BD drives.

In a separate statement Pioneer has said that is developing Blu-ray recorders with help from Sharp, Pioneer's top shareholder with a 14 percent stake, which should be available by the end of the year in Japan and followed by overseas launches. Sharp already offers Blu-ray recorders.

The selling price and unit sales target have yet to be set, a Pioneer spokesman said.

Blu-ray recorder demand in Japan is likely to jump 18-fold to 3.6 million units by 2012, according to Fuji Chimera Research Institute.
